Captain's Corner
Club Report
Good morning golfers

Three things in this report.

1. Upcoming Club Championship.

2. Course Renovations.

3. Committee Members needed.

Then there may be a couple advertisements.

1. Club Championships

Entries are trickling in.

The Club Championships are played in divisions; Senior (playing handicap 0 - 9), Intermediate (10 - 16), Junior A (17 to 23), Junior B 23 plus...

The Senior Division is an open division.  Anyone may enter the Senior Club Champs regardless of playing handicap.

All handicaps are assessed off the blue tees to provide for the grades only.  Please note, Senior and Intermediate Divisions will compete off the Blue Tees, Junior A will compete off the White Tees and Junior B will compete off the Red Tees.

The Stroke Play Championships (held Sundays September 1 & 8 ) double as the qualification rounds for the Match Play Championships to be played on consecutive Sundays immediately following.

The Club Championships are the pre eminent club event each year, and, the winners of the Senior, Intermediate and Junior A matchplay championships become the club's entries in the WGI Chanmpions of Champions.

A plate competition for first round losers and a championship stableford will also feature in conjunction with the main event.

Entries will close on Thursday 29 August at 4pm to allow a draw to be completed and notified.

Tee times have been blocked off for the duration of the club champs to provide the space for the competition to go on unimpeded.  Depending on entries it is hoped to hold a multi tee qualifying event to allow the field to arrive back in the clubhouse at the same time.

You may enter online (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/event-calendar), or by email (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz), by signing on to the competition sheet posted in the downstairs foyer, or call the club (04 476 7337).

We had a full field last year and it was a wonerdful event.  Let's do even better this year.  So don't delay, enter today.

2. Course Renovations

It's that time of the year again.

The greens will be cored starting Tuesday 3 September through to Wednesday 4 September.  During the coring process the course will be closed for play.

TK hopes to have nine holes available for play on Thursday 5 September and all things going extremely well, the eighteen holes open by Friday 6 September.

Obviously all this is weather dependant so we keep our fingers crossed for good weather.

Once again, it goes without saying, that we regret any inconvenience caused by this work but the improvement of the course over the last year is very evident and this work will further enhance our playing surface.

A call for volunteers has gone out, but in the event that you have time available please let Clayton Willocks know at the golf club (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) (04 476 7337) so that your name may be added to the list of helpers.  There is no such thing as too many volunteers, there is always something for everyone to do.

3. Committee Members Needed

Once a year (at the annual general meeting) all officers and committee members are elected.  This usually involves a few willing people putting their hands up and hey presto they are on the committee.

This year we have some vacancies coming up.

Our President, Mike Suggate, is retiring; Vice President Adrian Porter has retired; new member Graeme Couper is having to quit, and a couple others left during the course of the year.

At the annual meeting all positions are vacant.

We are looking for a President, Vice President, Club Captain, Womens Club Captain, Treasurer and six committee members.

We have some challenges facing us with a number of rule changes and financial considerations to be worked through as we work to continue to build the club and improve the course and its facilities.

A call will be made shortly for nominations so consider carefully what you might be able to provide to the club by way of service.

The Annual Meeting is nearly always held on the first Saturday in December.

4. Miscellaneous

a) I was going to run a disc draw for this Saturday's Monthly Medal, but as I am away I will postpone the disc draw until the November Monthly Medal.

b) Divots.  Once again we have had reports of poor etiquette on the course.  Replace your divots and while you are about it repair any others you may happen upon.  Sand Buckets are available for you to carry on the course.  There are sand bins on the first, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 13th tees to replenish your buckets.

Please also clean up any plug marks and help the green staff.

c) Fewer Pests

Looks like the pest control measures are starting to have a good effect.  Much nicer not to have some much pesky wildlife interfering around the course.  Big thanks to the green staff for their efforts.

d) Golf Results are available on line (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/competition-results?ComeFromCat=1827).  Keep up to date on what has happened over the weekend and through the week.

5. Golf Lessons

Get your game in shape for the Club Champs with a session with Stephen.  Feedback I have received from those who have worked with him are that he's pretty good.  The rate for Karori Members is super competitive too.  Get in touch with him, and Clayton can help with this too.

Ends

That's it for this edition.

Let's hope the weather plays it's part this week.

The days are getting longer and we are not far away now from daylight savings with all the extra golfing opportunities that provides.

Enjoy your week, and I am looking forward to being back in time to get my hands on a spade/broom/whatever to help get our greens into great shape for the upcoming golfing season.
