Covid - Update

Please remember while in Level 2 to book a tee time prior to arriving at the golf course. You also need to sign in with the covid tracer app and please sanitise before and after printing a scorecard. Another email will be sent out this weekend after the announcement on whether or not the alert level will change and what it means for us at the golf course.

Matt’s Message: (Greenkeeper’s memo)

Please remember to take and fill a sand bucket each time you go out. Thanks to those members who make a point of doing this regularly. It really does make a big difference to the recovery of the fairways. Also repairing those pesky pitch marks on the green ensures your ball will run straight and true to the hole. We appreciate everyone doing their bit.

Miners Arm Bowl Winners

Congratulations to Grant Pollard & Keith Chung and Perry Florance & Keith Atkinson for becoming the joint winners of the Miners Arms Trophy which was hotly contested in December, January and February. Both pairs scored a total of 132 points. A good tip for next year, to score well make sure your playing partner is named Keith!

2020 WINNERS - PLEASE RETURN TROPHIES

We ask that you don’t make the Committee have to ring those who are clutching the 2020 trophies. We know you are proud of your achievements but we need them back in the cabinet. The deadline was the beginning of March - and you have an amnesty till St Patrick’s Day 17 March. Please return to the office desk or at the bar. Thank you.

The cost is $10 (early bird) entry fee if registered before Wednesday 24 March - from then it will cost $15). You can enter online or on the noticeboard downstairs. It is a 10am multi-tee start. Please come to the clubhouse to register and pick up your cards from 9am. There will be nearest the pin, longest drive, twos and raffles.

COME ALONG AND LET’S CELEBRATE OUR WONDERFUL HISTORY TOGETHER!

On Saturday 27 March we will be celebrating 50 years to the day of the official opening of the

current Karori Golf Club. We celebrated 50 years of the Club’s incorporation in 2018 with a special Jubilee tournament but the course didn’t open for play until 1970 and wasn’t officially opened until 1971. The attached excerpt from Four to the Fore, David Sercombe’s history of the Club through all its incarnations dating back to 1905 (the current club is actually the 4 th incarnation of the Karori Golf Club) includes a photo of the then MP for Karori and deputy Prime Minister, Sir John Marshall, and our first President Ted Harcourt, on the first tee officially opening the course.

The tournament promises to be a fun event, open to all current and former members and friends, and will be a great way for new members to meet other members and for former members to revisit the club and hopefully renew their love affair with our course. We will be playing for what we now call the Jubilee Cup, being the club donated by the Quinn family which was originally won by their father in 1940 during the third incarnation of the Karori Club, and was won by Luke Underwood when we played for it in 2018.

Interclub

Team Captain’s meeting was held last week to discuss team selections and playing positions and team strategies. Great work Team Captains. You have your finger on the pulse. Thank you also to all who are participating in these teams and all the best for Saturday. Div 2 are hosting Masterton at home with all other divisions battling their matches Martinborough, Shandon and Otaki respectively.

Women - 9 Hole Interclub

Last Monday secured a draw against Royal Wellington/Otaki at Manor Park. Susan Wright showed steady nerve to secure a 1 up win. Well done.

Women - 18 Hole Pennants

Karori is hosting Pennants on Monday 8th. They will be playing their match against Miramar at home so we wish them well with this well.

Wednesday Club

There were 29 starters in this week's Wednesday Club, which was played in cloudy and breezy but warm conditions. It was a stableford competition and there were some good scores. Jim Waters won with 42 stableford points, followed closely by Gerd Warnke with 41, Gunter Karau with 40 and Victor Diem with 39. There were prizes down to 37. Keith Gaskin got 38 points and yet again scored one under his age. The bunny was Mike Suggate, although with a reasonable mid-twenties score. Marcus Henry won Nearest the Pin on the 4th, and sunk his putt, so the Pig was very disappointed. Twos were also scored by Keith Gaskin on the 2nd, and Gerd Warnke on the 13th. So, it was a great day for Gerd who won all the prizes of the day including raffle.

Course Rating -

We are having the Karori Golf Club course re-rated on Monday 22 March. A team from WGI will be undertaking this process with assistance from Committee and Greenstaff. Having this process happening does mean that the course will be closed on Monday 22 March until 3pm (postponement date is Monday 29 March.) Preparations have already been undertaken for this, last Friday measurements were taken, the course was walk and discussions were had.
