This continued amazing weather has resulted in a bumper month for the Club, and we still have a week to go! Following on the footsteps of our $10k Waitangi Day, the Club has already exceeded the Green Fee forecast for February. This is a fantastic result for the Club and means we can get a few of those important maintenance jobs underway that have been deferred for a while. Our senior & junior inter club teams had mixed results and it was fantastic to see the Clubhouse overrun with families on Sunday. Oh, and how about our new flags!!!

Womens Results

Round 1 of the Ayers Cup for women over 50 was played on Sunday. The second round was meant to be played on Tuesday but the weather was against us. Congratulations to Fiona Kearns who scored 34 stableford points and has won the cup. This Tuesday/Sunday will be LGU and outing round 2. Remember to enter LGU on the scorecard and record your putts on the chart in the women’s changing room. (Cheers Denise)

9 Hole Ladies

We played our third interclub game on Thursday and sadly had a 3-1 loss to Otaki after an encouraging 4-0 win last week over Boulcott's Farm at Shandon. The weather was beautiful and the course was in great condition. Congratulations to Sue McLaren who has won all three matches. (Cheers Hilary)

Wednesday Club

A field of 18 played a Par competition in blustery but dry conditions. Graeme Crocker was the winner on countback from Christopher Pearce (both on +3). Balls were given down to all square. Derek Fitzgibbon was nearest the pin, but there were no twos on the day. Matthew Everett won the raffle with Terry McAlister second. Those that did not get a prize received a consolation chocolate. (Cheers Patrick)

Wednesday Twilight

Thirty one competitors ventured out to Twilight this week, to play in pretty windy conditions. Once more, a bunch of golfers (8) played to their handicap or slightly better, winning $5 and $10 vouchers.

This week's runners up were Brigitte Boenisch- Brednich and Andrew Gardiner on 20 points ($15) and  the winners were Will Lyall and Wayne Cook, both winning a $20 voucher for 21 points.

NTP was Tim Brosnahan and there were no 'twos' this week. Thanks to Doug Calhoun on the BBQ, to Karen Simcox and Brigitte for their amazing salads and to Isaac in the kitchen. Come along and enjoy the fun at Twilight next week :) (Cheers Gail)

Greens Update

Earlier this week the Greens were sprayed with MCPA, Safe N, Enrich and Tri cure. MCPA is a herbicide that we apply for the control of star weed and toad rush. The combination of Safe N (liquid nitrogen) and Enrich (liquid iron) delivers high nitrogen for plant safe growth and a lush green colour response. Using Tri cure (wetting agent) in summer is important because it helps water penetrate deeper into the soil, preventing runoff and ensuring the grass has access to necessary moisture during hot, dry periods when evaporation rates are high. This improves turf health and reduces the development of hydrophobic soil conditions.

Drainage Update

Huge shout out to Keith Atkinson who has found some large culverts that were overgrown and temporarily lost! Yesterday we started the process of clearing these out get them fully functional again. We will also be clearing out the drains & sumps around the Clubhouse to get them functional again. Below are some images of the clearance work around the back of the 2nd green & water pooling around the Clubhouse entrance.

Call for Volunteers: Culverts & Creeks

I would like to thank all the volunteers that have put in a huge effort over the last month. You guys have made our lives easier, completing some of the jobs we would like to do but don't have the time. We have a couple of big months coming up with drainage being done over the next 2-3 weeks and coring being done on 8-11 April.

We are looking to put together two days next week Monday (24th) & Tuesday (25th) to clear the culvert on the 17th Hole and part of the creek on the 5th Hole. This will allow me to then get a digger in to clear the drainway. If you have the time please contact president@karorigolf.co.nz and he will add you to the list of volunteers. Details are:

  • Date: Mon & Tue next week
  • Timings: 9am at the Clubhouse
  • Dress: Old clothes, sturdy footwear & gloves (if you have them)
  • Bring: Sunscreen & water bottle
  • Lunch: Provided by the Club

Green Recycling

If anyone has any green recycling crates laying around taking up space we would gratefully receive them. We sort our glass recycling into colours (so its easy for the recycling driver to empty) and could to with several more. If you have one spare, please either bring to the Clubhouse or leave in the recycling area (the old dairy shed to the right of the Clubhouse as you walk to the practice putting green). Thanks.

Do You Have Landscape Skills?

The Course Sub-Committee is keen to know if there's anyone out there with landscaping skills, in particular planting, that might be willing to help with course development. It would be great to have some in-house expertise guide future course work. If you know of anyone, please email David McNaughton (david@karorigolf.co.nz).

Tee Bookings

Members are asked to help us ensure we have accurate statistics on the usage of the course in order that the Committee can make informed decisions – to do this we need members to please ensure a tee time is booked for every round played, and that you check-in at the Clubhouse before playing.  Its easy and quick to do in the GolfNZ App, or on our website, and will make sure we comply with Health and Safety by knowing who is on the course at any time.  There are still members just walking onto the course without a booking or checking-in which makes it difficult to marshal efficiently or ensure there is availability for visitor bookings.
