Can't quite beat this spell of weather we are having.

Lots of golf being played to the extent that as of this morning the Karori Golf Club has had an increase of 21.7% in the number of rounds played as opposed to last year.  This figure does not include those who turn up and play without running off a card.

This Sunday, for the first time since 2009, Junior Pennants (9 hole) will be played at Karori.  On the same day the 2025 Term 1 Junior Academy will also tee off.  This is a wonderful return on our efforts last year to attract, maintain and involve our "futures" members and their families in golf.  It has been an amazing success.

One of the quirks of the junior pennants is that our home players are hosts for this round and don't get to rack up points on their own course.

Note, the juniors will dominate afternoon tee times as a result so if you are wanting an afternoon game of golf, contact the club house who will provide you with a tee time off the 10th tee.  Please don't just rock up and hope to get in the field.

Here's hoping Wellington's young golfers have an enjoyable time on our course.  They will be able to enjoy a well presented course thanks to TK Ross and the green keeping team.

A big shout out to our volunteers who are clearing the debris and wood from the 4th and 5th holes.  Great progress is being made and President Mark is a little bit reticent to say that we are nearly done having done so on three occasions.  Anyway, those who can make it on Tuesday should come along for another go.  By all accounts the golf aftrwards is a bunch of fun.

9 Hole Ladies

The 9 hole ladies played a nett medal on the front 9 with the winner being Lindsey Pickering on nett 33 on count back from Trish Titcombe.  Next best were two women on nett 35.

18 Hole Ladies

Results from two competitions from the last two weeks:

Rose Rigarlsford won the Hazel Buck stableford competition.

LGU was played on Sunday with Julie Watson winning with a net 73.

Tuesday Denise Marten had a nett 64 so was the overall winner.

Just a reminder that for the first 5 LGU rounds putts are also counted and can be recorded on the chart in the women's changing room.

If you are wondering why your everyday eclectics are not being recorded, Dot Golf has informed me that there were too many rounds for the programme and it timed out before anyone could enter. Therefore we will have to go old school and record the scores on the chart in the changing room.

On Tuesday the Ayers Cup for women over 50 will be played and on the following Sunday. All 18 hole women members are eligible to participate.

Wednesday Club

A field of 22 played a Stableford competition.

Ian Patience was the winner on count back from Helga Karau (both on 41 points). Gunter Karau was not far behind on 40 points tied with Gerd Warnke. Another three golfers got balls for 39 points. Jim Waters was nearest the pin, but the only twos of the day went to Patrick Cordue (4th) and Graham Crocker (6th). Bob Cavana won the raffle with Fergus McLean second.

Wednesday Twilight

Round 18 of the Twilight competition brought 37 golfers out to enjoy a beautiful summer's evening at KGC.

Golf balls and $5 vouchers were given to those who scored 18 and 19 stableford points; five golfers received $10 for 20 points and tonight's runners up, with 21 points, were Daren Riley, Terry Bastion and Bo Little (winning a $15 voucher).

Geoffrey Lee took out the top spot this week with 22 points (and $20).

Golf balls went to Ossie Santos for NTP, and to Daren Riley and Carey Clements for 'twos'.

Thanks to all who helped make this another great evening, especially to Doug Calhoun for BBQing.

See you next week!

Tractor Trouble!

As you all know our main tractor is out of action at the moment with both axles being taken away for investigation. The repair is covered by warranty. Should be back up and going 4-8 weeks. In the meantime, they have sent us a replacement tractor until ours has finished being repaired. This will be our next piece of big machinery to purchase.

Divots & Pitch Marks

Given the heightened use of our course, it's inevitable we'll have an increase in divots and pitch marks. Our greenskeepers work hard to keep the course in the best condition possible throughout the year, but they do need our help. We all must do our part to take care of and respect our course. We ask our members to do just a few simple things:

  • Replace your divots or fill with sand (i.e. carry a sand bucket)
  • Repair your pitch marks
  • Refrain from practicing on the course – use the practice area
  • If you see an unrepaired divot or pitch mark - please repair
  • If you see someone not complying with the above - have a polite word & let the staff know.

Doing these things will enhance the quality and enjoyment of our golf, and maintain the morale of our dedicated volunteers & greenkeepers!

Clubhouse Volunteers

Our Ladies Club Captain, Denise Marten, is looking to establish a 'House Sub-Committee' to promote and improve the fare and service we all wish to enjoy after golf. She's also seeking a pool of volunteers to help with bartending and food service, particularly during our busy periods, and provide the staff with the level of support they require on occasions to satisfy heavy demand.  Please let Denise know if you're open to helping out (denise@karorigolf.co.nz).

Don't be shy about this.  Our clubhouse should be a welcoming friendly environment and the quality of the fare offered and the friendliness of the service is key to this.  This is something we can all help with.

Course Volunteers - Starters & Marshalls

We need volunteers to act as Marshals (busy summer/autumn evenings mainly) and starters (weekends) to monitor course use, ensure that everyone who is not a members has paid green fees, groups are going off in no more than fours and everyone has a set of clubs.

We also want to station a person(s) at the 10th hole to stop people "pushing in" in front of those already playing through the front nine, monitoring for green fees and the other associated issues (size of groups, set of clubs each and so on).

We are aware that we are an easy touch for freeloaders and it is costing us a lot of money which could go to improving the course.

If we get sufficient volunteers to take a shift it is not likely to be an onerous contribution to your club.

This is also a good time to remind people that if you are going to have a game of golf make sure you book a tee time and pay the staff the courtesy of calling in to the shop to let us know that you are on the course.

So if you get asked to help, please say yes.  The more the merrier and the better the golfing experience will be for everyone.
