Captain's Comments

Good Morning All

Another busy weekend for the club with another round of men's interclub on Saturday, 3 of our teams at home.

We also had our Opening Day Novelty Ambrose on Sunday which had a few extra challenges to test the golfers like teeing off blind folded.

Junior interclub kicked off on Sunday, this is the first time for a number of years that Karori has entered a team in this competition. Well done to those involved in getting this off the ground.

At the opening day prizegiving a presentation was made to one of our foundation members and honorary life member Keith Gaskin.

Keith has shot scores equal or better than his age on 81 occasions between the ages of 74 and 90.  An amazing performance

Each week I plan to discuss a topic from the rules of golf to help the education process for all of us.

When to Hit a Provisional Ball

If a ball might be lost outside a penalty area or be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally under penalty of stroke and distance (see Rule 14.6). This includes when:

  • The original ball has not been found and identified and is not yet lost

  • A ball might be lost in a penalty area but also might be lost somewhere else on the course, or

  • A ball might be lost in a penalty area but might also be out of bounds.

If the only place the ball could be lost is in a penalty area the a provisional ball may not be used.

Before playing a provisional ball the player must announce to his playing partners/opponents that they are playing a "Provisional Ball"

Opening Day Ambrose

A good field of 55 showed up for our Opening Day Ambrose which involved a few novelty holes including

  • Teeing off blindfold - some found this easier than normal golf
  • Teeing off with the opposite hand clubs
  • Putting with balls that didn't go too straight

There seemed to be a lot of fun being had out on the course

The prizewinners were

3rd Place : Boyd Kenna, Nicola Martin, Jono Wake, Julie Watson

2nd Place : Scott McHardy, Keith Atkinson, John Stubbe, Dick Borgdorf

Ist Place : Graham Black, Terry McAllister, Bob Cavana. Daren Riley

In addition 4 teams won prizes in the lucky draw

Mens Interclub

The 2nd round of men's interclub was held on Saturday 1 February with 3 teams at home and 1 away.

Division 2 - Had a hard fought 8.5 to 6.5 loss at Trentham who were the second placed team last year. Very tight matches were played all the way through the order.  Trevor Brown and Dave Thorburn were the outstanding pair winning all 3 points for the team. Our 2 young guys Isaac Henry and William McNaughtan played well together with the matches going down to the wire. (Thanks Deane)

Division 5 - Backing up from an encouraging 6 points earned at Boulcott in Rd 1, Div 5 scored a decisive 11.5 - 3.5 win over Mahunga in perfect conditions at home.

Singles wins to Mike Wood, Russell Turner, Fergus McDougall, Graham Black, Gary Clarke Matt Roche, and Steve Witkowski and 4 of the 5 four-ball matches ensured a healthy margin on the day. Newcomer Jake Troughton did very well to fight back from a deficit to halve his match. (Thanks Russell)

Division 9 - Were at Home and suffered a 6.5 to 8.5 loss to Boulcotts Farm.  Player of the day was Sar Palado with a 4&3 win in his match. (Thanks Mike)

Division 12 - Played Otaki at home and secured a  great result, winning 11.5- 3.5. Gary Wellbelove and Tim Kirby grinned all the way to the clubhouse with their  6/5 wins and our new interclubber,Ali Daman Willems, joined John Stubbe with wins at 4/3. Playing his  first interclub  Bob Zou eagled the 12th. Everyone contributed to this great win this week. (Thanks Gail)

Junior Interclub - Pennants

18 Hole Pennants - The Junior 18H team was throwing some solid golf at its Waikanae opposition on Sunday at Miramar.  A convincing 3.5 to .05 win started the season off right.  The new team shirts and steady play off the tees had the opposition struggling to adapt in a relatively light wind for Miramar.  The boys will be getting their game faces ready for the next match at Shandon on the 16th of Feb.  Thanks to Stephen Wood for the practice session with both junior teams!(Thanks Seth)
