Well, this weather goes from the sublime to the ridiculous. We have extended cold, wet and windy periods, and the course and clubhouse are quiet; then we have a day out of the box we get crazy busy! The course is loving the wet weather and the fairways are in great shape for this time of year. We just just need the rain & wind to come at night ;-). The committee is getting into its work and there is much to do. Stay tuned for various competition updates and calls for volunteers. We are hosting the Wellington Vets on Monday, so the course is closed from 7:30am - 2:30pm. We're also looking for a new casual staff member for the Clubhouse. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please let us know.

Opening Day Ambrose - Sunday 2 Feb

This will be a fun ambrose tournament with the aim of members mixing and playing with different people.  As such the 4 person teams will be drawn randomly.  There will be an option for players to form their own teams but there will be a penalty for doing so as we want people mixing. Full details coming soon.

Wednesday Twilight

Wednesday's weather improved in the afternoon and brought 15 golfers out to play in our first Twilight  competition of 2025. Four collected a $5 voucher with 18 points: Tim Brosnahan, Brigitte Boenisch-Brednich, Ossie Santos and Will Lyall (once again outplaying his dad). Wayne Cook came in second with 19 points and a $10 voucher and this week's winners were Terry McAlister and Gail Kirkland on 20 points (winning $15).

Ossie collected a golf ball for NTP and, although there were no 'twos' this week, Wayne secured an 'eagle' on hole #9 (I have to report that he needed to borrow the President's clubs to play and now wants to buy them from him). Big thanks to John Stubbe for BBQing this week and to Brigitte, Karen Simcox and Ossie for their lovely gourmet contributions. Also thanks to Isaac in the kitchen. See you next week! (Cheers Gail)

Junior Inter Club

  • Finals: May 2025 (dates depend on number of teams entered)
  • Play: Sunday's - typically fortnightly but can sometimes be two weeks in a row

Call for Volunteers: Sanding & Seeding Tee Blocks

TK seeks a team of volunteers to sand and seed tee blocks on Tuesday next week (14 Jan 2025). This is not a full cover on the blocks, it is merely filling in the divots and bare patches. Two groups of four are required, so if you are available could you please let TK know (TK@karorigolf.co.nz). We will meet at the Clubhouse at 9am. Lunch will be supplied by the Club and we should be done by early afternoon. It would be great to see a good muster on the day.

Timber!!!!

It was an eventful start on Sunday morning. Sometime between 5:30am and 6:15am, a very large tree fell blocking South Makara Road between the Makara Village turnoff and the club, cutting off those further south from civilisation. Thankfully, WCC and Downer responded promptly and were able to restore access and the Club reopened at 10:30am. It was a quiet day on the course, it seemed most had given up hope of playing golf and made other plans (the 70kmph southerly and 12 degree temperature probably played a part too!)

Arborist Work Continues

Over the new few weeks we will have arborists working in various tree lines. If you happen across this work, please keep a safe distance at all times. If a hole is temporarily declared 'out of play' record your score as a 'net par' and safely move on to the next hole.

AED Cabinet

A huge thanks to Wednesday Twilight for purchasing our new AED Cabinet & Steve Witkowski for installing in the Clubhouse. Defibrillators are used to save a patient when they are suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. They scan the heart to determine whether a shock is needed and if so, will deliver one.

Early in 2024 Kevin "Norks" Norquay laid out a challenge to Ben Willocks, one of our junior members. A box of Pro V1's was the prize. Ben needed to gain a lower handicap than Norks before 31 Dec 2024 to win. It went down to the wire, with Ben narrowly edging Norks in December (17.3 versus 17.8). Sadly, the main contributing factor was Norks' handicap 'blowing out' over the last two months! As you can see from the photo Norks was less pleased than Ben. When asked about the challenge, Norks replied "my plan was to encourage Ben by giving him something to chase in 2024, but all I did was hobble and trip over, so he caught me with ease. It was great fun with some outstanding banter, just like a club should be!"

Clubhouse Casual Staff Vacancy

We have a casual position in our shop and bar available. Hours and days of work are varied and weather dependent. Familiarity with food handling a requirement and experience in retail and bar work an advantage. Knowledge of golf a decided advantage. Apply to clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz.

Membership Invoices

Members are reminded that we rely on prompt payment of your membership invoices, and January is a big month for us in terms of renewals.  Please check your invoice due date and ensure that this is met in order to help us manage our cashflow, pay staff, continue to maintain the course standard, and keep your memberships Active.  If you are struggling with payments or have any queries on your membership please address these to membership@karorigolf.co.nz

Tee Bookings

Members are asked to help us ensure we have accurate statistics on the usage of the course in order that the Committee can make informed decisions – to do this we need members to please ensure a tee time is booked for every round played, and that you check in at the Clubhouse before playing.  Its easy and quick to do in the GolfNZ App, or on our website, and will make sure we comply with Health and Safety by knowing who is on the course at any time.  We see too many members just walk onto the course without a booking or coming into the Clubhouse and as a result we are not able to marshall efficiently or ensure there is availability for visitor bookings.
