Captain's Comments

Good morning all

This Captain's Corner comes to you a few days later than normal.  Monday I was away at Otaki with Wellington Golf Course Rating group assessing their course, Tuesday I was mowing rough at our course, Wednesday I was still doing stuff around the golf club with a meeting in the evening,  and today I finally get a chance to do some writing. I do apologise for the delay in getting this done this week, to be followed by Friday Flash (maybe - Clayton is on a Jury this week).

We are nine days away from our Annual Meeting on the 7th of December.  There will be change with a number of committee members retiring and I am delighted to say that a number of nominations have been received for the 2025 committee.

We are always looking for someone to take on the role of Treasurer.  Our current treasurer took the position reluctantly last year and has indicated that he may stay on this year, but another committee member with an accounting background would be most welcome.

Mark Reed has been our technical guru helping those of us from "hapu boomer" get in to the 21st century and being our fixit master around the club.  If he decides not to stand again I am hopeful that he will remain available to the club to help out in these roles.

Our President Mike Suggate has decided to call it a day.

Because we are a committee and by nature "hands on" the work he puts in to the good running of the club (largely unseen) is phenomenal.  He deserves a vote of thanks from us all.

So there is still time to put your hand up if you can help.  Let us know and we will help out with any formalities.

As for the rest of us, note the date, 7 December in your extensive social calendars and come to the AGM and stay around afterwards for a game of golf to celebrate the end of the year.

Again, more good news

The inaugural match between Matts Mob and the Shirties was held Sunday 24 November.

For the record Matts Mob prevailed but more importantly an impressive sum of money was raised from entry fees to go towards the "Futures" initiative that has been so successfully launched recently.

Well done guys (and gals).

Course News

I had a good look around the course yesterday and lots of good work is going on to really tidy up a number of very rough patches.

TK has been spraying for weeds (the odd bit of toad rush has popped its head up again) so we should see grass getting a better chance to flourish as the weeds die off.

Divots are in evidence again.  It is good to see members using sand buckets.  A bit of sand in a divot hole helps enormously.  Please use them in divots in the rough too. A not so well known local rule is that you get a drop from a sanded divot and this includes the rough.

A reminder that volunteers are always welcome.  If you can help out a bit around the course please lt us know.

TK has invited volunteers to a game of golf on Friday 13th of December followed by a barbecue afterwards.  10am tee time.

If you are a volunteer and have not received an invitation let us know.  We had so many people help this year we may have forgotten some (sad but true - I'm getting older). Denise, if you could pass on the invitation to the club house volunteers please, it would be most helpful.

Wednesday Competition

  • This is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours midweek with a bunch of golfers. Meet in the club house at 10.15 for 10.30 disc draw. $5 entry for the day pays for the competition and a raffle.

Sunday Club Day

  • This year long competition has finished after round 45 which resulted as follows:
  • 1st Boyd Kenna 375pts, 2nd Gary Wellbelove 372pts, 3rd Garth Mickell 372pts, 4th Nicholas Mills 370pts, 5th Kevin Norquay 367pts.
  • Best of the women: Gail Kirkland 365pts, 2nd Ossie Santos 363pts

This Sunday competition will start again in the new year.

Top Dog

The monthly medal winners play off for the Top Dog this Sunday.  A draw will be completed and notified to those who qualified.  The competition is best net.  All medal winners will be presented with their medals and a sleeve of Pro V1 golf balls.  There is a piece of Silver Ware for the winner and a bunch more golf balls.

Miners Arms

Grab yourself a partner and enter the Miners Arms three round competition.

This is a four ball better ball stableford competition played off the white tees.  Each team must play a round in December, January and February.

Note, you must nominate the day that you are playing before you tee off.  You must play with someone to mark your card.  This competition is not loaded in the computer and you will need to write your score on the entry sheet which will be posted on the notice board in the downstairs foyer.

As in previous years everyone is welcome to enter.  Some of our futures members may well surprise in this event.

Summer Eclectic

This is open to everyone but it will be played off the white tees.  Last years experiment of using all tees made it very difficult to work out a winner so we are keeping it simple this year.  You may play any day of the week from 01 December 2024 until 28 February 2025.

Entering your card after every round will update your score.

Women's Summer Events

The women have the following events over the summer months:

1. Summer Stableford (18hole/9hole), 2. Summer Cup (18hole/9hole), 3. Summer Eclectic (18hole/9hole)

Select the competition(s) you wish to play when you print your score card.

Inter Club Blue

  • Grant Pollard still leads in this event with a couple more months to go.  Available for entry on Saturdays and Sundays.

Karori Eagles Halberg Foundation Tournament

Fifty five players enjoyed superb golfing conditions on Saturday for the Halberg event.  We even had three visitors from Christchurch join us on the day.

The winners were:

1. 9 Hole Women: 1st, Trish Titcombe 16pts on count back from Chris Suggate 16pts.

2. 18 Hole Women: 1st Julie Watson 40pts from Denise Marten 35pts

3. Division 2 Men: Graeme Crocker 36pts from Noel Gilchrist (Pegasus) 34pts

4. Division 1 Men: Stuart Preston 36pts on count back from Mark Peck 36pts.

This event is a fundraiser for the Murray Halberg Foundation and was well supported through the entry fee, the raffles and an auction of various "goodies" all of which swelled the coffers of the charity.

A big thank you to Terry Bastion and the Karori Eagles for running this successful event again this year.

"Gaskies All Comers"

  • Everyone looking for a game on Sunday is welcome to join this happy band of golfers. (8.45am at the picnic table for a 9am tee time).
  • This is a great way for members to meet and get to know each other, particularly welcoming to new members or those who do not have a Sunday Tee Time.
  • It's good to see this group growing again.  Everyone is welcome. New players were at the picnic table this past Sunday.  Really good to see new members looking to get involved in club activities.
  • Hope to see you on Sunday.

Inter Club 2025

  • A call has gone out to all likely suspects for Inter Club 2025 and we are always on the look for players. The Inter Club Blue Tee has been set up for anyone to try out (Saturdays and Sundays only). Grant Pollard leads this at the moment.
  • Sadly the weather won on Saturday with the first trial but we try again on Saturday 30 November tee time from 8.30am.  Thank you to the 24 of you who turned up.
  • If you haven't yet, please let me know if you are available for the 30th.  Entries close on Friday 29 November so I can do a draw and notify everyone.
  • The WGI Inter Club Competition starts on Saturday 25 January 2025 and concludes 10 May 2025 (weather permitting).

Nominations for 2025 Committee

Nominations for committee need to be completed and delivered to the "manager" (staff at the bar) by the 30th of November (Saturday). These need to be displayed in the club house seven days before the Annual Meeting (Saturday 30 November).

Nomination forms are on the noticeboard in the downstairs foyer close to where the water cooler is.

The committee will be elected at the December AGM on Saturday 7 December, followed by the "Christmas Cheer" golf event.

So, a bit of business and a bunch of fun.

Sale of Liquor

The Committee received an update on some of the Sale of Liquor regulations at it's last meeting. A number of staff and volunteers are completing their bar managers license. We would love to hear from any  members who hold the bar managers license and are prepared to help out as a volunteer from time to time.  We need to establish a roster that we can match against opening times to remain compliant with our Sale of Liquor obligations.
