With the City of Wellington Classic & Club Champs behind us, one would think we could coast into Christmas. No so! Inter Club trials are about to kick-off, and the 2025 Inter Club games start on 25 Jan. So there's plenty to play for over the next couple of months!

We've had two new members join this week. A big welcome to:

  • Adam Payne (Junior 19-25)
  • Blair Miller (Student)

Ladies

  • 9 Hole Midweek Women’s: A small group of 9 holers enjoyed playing a fun tournament on the back 9 this week, finishing just before the rain arrived. Congratulations to Elizabeth Wagner who won on a countback from Chris Suggate. We’ve had a very interrupted spring calendar in 2024, with Tuesday often being the only wet day of the week. Also affected was our second attempt to run our She Loves Golf event.  Hopefully, it will be third time lucky this Tuesday. (Cheers Chris)

  • She Loves Golf: Unfortunately the weather again played its part in disrupting the She Loves Golf event we’d planned for Tuesday evening.  The next session (5pm on Tue 12 November) is fully subscribed so all offers to help Maurice (i.e. provide putting and pitching tips) will be gratefully received. Maurice will provide volunteer coaches a brief lesson on these skills beforehand. Please email the Ladies Club Captain, Denise Marten (denise@karorigolf.co.nz) if you can assist.

  • Golf & Wine: Every Tuesday evening there's an open invite to meet other ladies for a fun and relaxed game of golf. Non-members welcome. All levels. Perfect way to get in a round of golf after work. Tee-off from 5:45pm. Thanks to Sarah Ellis for co-ordinating.

Wednesday Club

  • Due to the weather, Wednesday Club was canceled this week.

Wednesday Twilight

  • After the drizzly day on Wednesday, we had 15 golfers turn out for the Twilight competition this week. Geoff Lee took out fifth place, playing to his handicap and earning a $5 voucher. There were three in second place: Andrew Gardiner, James Cosgrove and Terry Bastion on 19 stableford points, winning a $10 voucher. Daren Riley took out first place ($20 voucher) with a great score of 22 points.

  • Golf balls went to Russell Dickson for NTP and to Daren for his 'eagle' on the 9th! Once again, no 'twos' were to be seen. Thanks to Steve Witkowski for BBQing and to Isaac in the kitchen. Another great night was had! Come along and join in next week! (Cheers Gail)

Gaskies - 9am Every Sunday

  • Gaskies is an "all comers" group of members who meet on Sunday morning to play golf and enjoy each other's company. It is particularly good for new members who are looking for people to pair up with to enjoy their golf. Nick Mills will be the starter this Sunday. Be at the picnic table at 8.45am for the card draw before the 9am tee off.  You never know who you will be playing with so your chance of meeting more golfers at the club is pretty good.

Junior Golf

  • Junior Golf Coaching Programme: 45 juniors will be back this Sunday. Holes 1 - 9 will be for the exclusive use of programme participants between 1:30/2:00 - 4:30/5:00pm. Timings vary depending on which groups are playing the course each week. The practice facilities (fairway and putting green) will also be closed for programme use from 3:00 - 4:30pm. Please consider this when planning your golfing weekend.

  • Junior Coaching Programme Rules: You might have noticed Holes 1, 3, 5 & 7 have painted circles on the fairways. This is to accommodate the younger members of the Junior programme when they're out playing the course. Here are the rules they play by:
    • Modified short holes (75 - 135m)
    • Play from orange cones
    • 10 shots maximum / hole - if you need to give your child's ball a wee throw forward to give them a chance of scoring a ten then go for it
    • ALL players must be behind the player striking the ball
    • The player furthest from the hole goes first. When putting, the furthest player putts and continues until the ball is holed
    • The player with the best score tees off first on the next hole
    • If you lose a ball drop one in the clear with no extra penalty shots added
    • Air shots DON’T count
    • Caddies are COMPULSORY. They help keep speed of play (9 min/hole) and help to keep score. Please keep advice to a minimum.

Green Speed

Some of you may be interested in how fast the greens were running last weekend for the City of Wellington Classic. Green speed is measured by a stimpmeter, which is often shortened to ‘stimp’.  When TK & Will started at KGC, the greens were running at around 6.5. The health of our greens has slowly improved (due to thatch removal,

coring and weed eradication), which now allows the greens to be cut shorter and rolled more. On Saturday before the tournament the greens measured 10.3 on the stimp - the fastest reading in recent memory. As you can see from the table alongside, this equates to the high end of 'Medium-Fast' for Tournament Play. We typically cut the greens at 3.5mm and roll periodicallly, but leading up to the City of Wellington Classic, the cutting height was lowered to 3mm and greens were rolled daily. Moving forward, we intend to keep the speeds at around 8 - 9 on the stimp (i.e. 'Fast' for Normal Play).

'Birdie' Warning at Golf Club
(by Kevin Norquay)

Karori Golf Club installed a no-go area for its premier tournament to prevent players being attacked by a pair of karearea (native falcons).

When the City of Wellington Classic was played on Saturday, the more than 100 entrants were warned to keep a wary eye out for two aggressive birds.

“We have a nesting karearea about 30 trees up the tree line on the 14th hole,” club captain Mark Peck warned the participants by email.

“They have been ‘swooping’ golfers who get too close, so we are going to mark the area. A drop zone will be established to allow a free drop from danger.

Practice Fairway Use

If you happen to be using the practice fairway and come across Pinnacle Paractice golf balls lying on the ground, please leave them alone. Approximately 40 balls went missing on Sunday between an individual lesson ending and the junior coaching programme commencing. If you happened to collect them, please return them to the clubhouse. If you see someone using them, please let clubhouse staff know.

Course Marshals Are Paying Off!

So far, nine freeloaders have been caught playing without paying which equates to ~$300 of green fees. Please do not be offended if you are approached and asked for your membership number. To help, please always book a tee-time online before playing, as our marshals have mobile access to the tee booking sheet.

Our staff work hard to keep the course in great condition, and this comes with a cost. Anyone who uses the course should pay their share and we intend to help them do so. We look forward to seeing some of you on your late afternoon rounds. Good golfing!

Annual General Meeting

The 2024 AGM (the 56th for lovers of history) will be held at the Clubrooms, 9.30am on Sat 07 Dec 24. This will be followed by a disc draw for 18- or 9-Holes of golf. We are still seeking members to join the committee. Nomination forms are available on the Clubhouse noticeboard and must be received by 30 Nov 24.
