Captain's Comments

What a great week for the golf club.

The City of Wellington Classic attracted over one hundred entrants with just under 40% entries from outside of the Karori Golf Club.

The weather behaved, the course was in superb condition and everyone seemed to have a good time.  The feedback was generous to our green staff and clubhouse staff for their efforts.

On the day all the volunteers who assisted on the registration desk and raffle table performed admirably and Denise ran the club house like a well oiled machine.

Then a special touch at prize giving when Keith Gaskin, life member and now in his nineties presented the cup to the winner Brad Rowland (Boulcott Farm) who shot 71.  Keith was the very first winner of the cup in his day shooting 72.

It was an outstanding success in every way.

Life Member and first winner of the CoW, Keith Gaskin (who won it in 1978 with a score of 72), presenting the City of Wellington Classic Cup to Brad Rowland, Winner of the 2024 City of Wellington Classic who shot 71 on the day.

Then to Sunday, week two of the Junior Golf Coaching Programme.

The course was packed in the afternoon with excited young people enjoying golf while their parents and caregivers enjoyed from a respectable distance. It was about kids having fun.

Once again, volunteers were in abundance to assist Stephen Wood and Maurice Munro tutor their charges at the start of their golf journey. Thanks to our volunteer helpers - Terry Bastion, Jon Lyall, Graham Black and Phil Hartley for helping guide the groups around the modified course.

And then it was to the club house for review and prize giving.  What a buzz!

The next chapter in the story starts this evening (postponed from last week because of weather) when "She Loves Golf" has its first session with a group of women who are curious about golf.  Once again Stephen Wood and Maurice Munro and a group of volunteers will encourage a new group of people to get involved in, and enjoy golf as a fun pastime.

Stop Press - The announcement has just been made that weather has canceled tonight, so better luck next week.

Well done to everyone who has made all this happen.  The culture change at the club is really exciting.

It occurs to me...

Sometimes we are quick to quibble about things that irk us but we are not very good at stepping back and looking and what's happening.

Review the weekend we have just had and bask in the reflective glow of something really special.

For two days of the weekend we have had a full clubhouse of happy golfers (and in the case of the Futures, their families) enjoying golf.  Well done everyone.

All of this has been member driven and supported by a group of motivated volunteers.  I'm not going to name names as I may miss someone, but you know who you are and to you a big thank you.

Feedback

Feedback from the weekend was that the course is in the best condition it has ever been.  This was nice to hear, particularly from Brad Rowland.  Good effort everyone!

Thank you to those who signed up to look after a bit of our course.

Apart from those who were thanked in Friday Flash last week for their efforts I want to also acknowledge Wayne Cook for painting the sand bins and spending quite a bit of time on a flymo, Tim Kirby for helping out for three hours of sanding and seeding fairways that needed it, and Ngatau for all his extra mahi as well.

Let's not forget Ian Colligan for mowing rough for two days, and Maurice Munro for all his tidy up work around the clubhouse too.

It all helped. The course was amazing on Saturday.

"Gaskies All Comers"

It was nice to see a good turnout on Sunday to the Gaskies All Comers tee times (8.45am at the picnic table for a 9am tee time).

This is a great way for members to meet and get to know each other, particularly welcoming to new members or those who do not have a Sunday Tee Time.

This Sunday I will be in Invercargill so Nick Mills will be the starter.

Inter Club 2025

A call has gone out to all likely suspects for inter club 2025 and we are always on the look for players.

If you are keen and want to get involved please let us know.  There is a division tailor made for you and your golf.

The competition starts at the end of January 2025 and concludes mid May 2025.

Nominations for 2025 Committee

I have spoken to a number of people about the 2025 Committee.

The Committee is in need of new blood to help with confronting the challenges of a growing club.

Committee duty is not onerous (it can be as busy as you wish it to be) but there is something for everyone to get involved with.

Nomination forms are on the noticeboard in the downstairs foyer close to where the water cooler is.

The committee will be elected at the December AGM on Saturday 7 December, followed by the "Christmas Cheer" golf event.

So, a bit of busines and a bunch of fun.
