We've had another productive week on the course - scrub clearance, rough maintenance, adopt-a-holers, painting, weed spraying, the list goes on. Thanks to everyone for doing their part - every little bit helps.

We've had six new members join this week. A big welcome (and in one case welcome back) to:

  • Jessica Huang (9H Intro)
  • Henry Robinson (Junior U18)
  • Oli Wilson (9H Intro)
  • David Eley (9H Intro)
  • Maree Goodall (Full)
  • Oliver Culbert (Junior U18)

It looks like the weather might be the main factor this long weekend. For those heading away, please be safe on the roads.

Ladies

  • 9 Hole Midweek Women: On Tuesday, a small group took advantage of the beautiful weather to play a Par round.  Congratulations to Sue McLaren who won on a countback from Trish Titcombe. We also welcomed Heather Kerr, our new 9 hole member. Next week will be the Club Championship and Flight finals.  Good luck to all four participants. All other golfers will play a stableford round. (Cheers Chris)

  • She Loves Golf: We’ve had a very positive response to our She Loves Golf event next Tuesday evening (29 October) which is fully subscribed with 25 registrations. We are now offering a follow-up/second session on Tuesday 5 November at 5pm. We are most fortunate to have the services of Maurice Munro and Stephen Wood to coach introductory skills to participants. Thanks in advance to all our volunteers and special thanks to Denise Marten for getting this off the ground. Please email the clubhouse or denise@karorigolf.co.nz if you know of anyone interested.

  • Golf & Wine: Every Tuesday evening there's an open invite to meet other ladies for a fun and relaxed game of golf. Non-members welcome. All levels. Perfect way to get in a round of golf after work. Tee-off from 5:45pm. Thanks to Sarah Ellis for co-ordinating.

Wednesday Club

  • With several regulars away, there was only a small field of 11 for yesterday’s Stableford competition. The course was looking great but there was a gusty cold wind which made conditions difficult. Jim Waters prevailed with an excellent score of 40 points just ahead of Derek Fitzgibbons on 39 points. Jim took the wine and Derek the chocolates. Ian Patience got a golf ball for nearest the pin but did have to pay the pig for his missed putt. Two others received golf balls and the rest of us had a consolation chocolate. Patrick Cordue won the raffle. (Cheers Patrick)

Wednesday Twilight

  • Twilight had 19 competitors this week. Six golfers played to their handicap and shared third place with their 18 stableford points, winning a $5 voucher: Daren Riley, Jeff Mason, James Cosgrove, Gail Kirkland, and Mark Storey (new to Twilight this week). Wayne Cook and Martin Binks came in joint first place with 20 points and $20 voucher each.

  • Winning golf balls this week: Brigitte Boenisch-Brednich for NTP (a millimetre away from the hole) and Kane Paki for the only 'two' this week. We also welcomed a visitor from Miramar, Laurie Vitale - hope to see you and Mark again next week. Big thanks to Jeff Mason for BBQing this week, Brigitte for a delicious salad, Isaac in the kitchen, and to our sponsor Richard Reith from Collective First National. (Cheers Gail)

Last Call: City Of Wellington Classic

  • We now have a total of 60 registrations (just 7 in the Womens Div so far). The City of Wellington Classic is our preeminent annual tournament. It is played in two Men's Divisions and a Women’s Division. It is open to all and entry fee is $40 for Karori Members. There are some great prizes to be won! All prospective and current interclub players should prioritise this event.

Greens Update

Some will have noticed the greens were a little darker this week due to fertiliser being applied (nitrogen & iron) to have them in the best possible shape for the City of Wellington Classic. You'll also notice the greens will get quicker as we get closer the the event next Saturday.

Last Call for Help - 'Adopt-a-Hole' Initiative

The following members have volunteered their time to help get our course in tip top shape for the City of Wellington Classic in 8 days time!

Thanks to those who have been out there repairing tee blocks, divots & pitch marks, as well as collecting and piling up branches & sticks under the trees. You can really see the difference & every little bit helps. For those that are yet to start, please let me know when you plan to, and I can make sure we have a sand/seed mix ready to collect at the greenskeepers shed. There are still a couple of holes waiting for adoption - if you're willing and able please email me: TK@karorigolf.co.nz.

GUR - Hole 2

GUR on the right of the 2nd green has been defined by the roped off area. Free drop at the front of the roped area. A drop zone will be defined before the City of Wellington Classic.

Cart Use

With more wet weather forecast this weekend, please stick to the fairways. If your ball is in the rough, park on the fairway and walk to it. This will not only protect the wetter areas from being damaged, but also make it less likely we'll need to prevent cart use in the future.

Slow Play

We've had over 60 new members join in the last six months and we anticipate our green fee takings to continue increasing. It's fantastic we have more golfers playing our course, however, it can also lead to some frustrations. One of which is slow play. It is the duty of every golfer to keep up with the game in front, not just ahead of the game behind.

Here are some ways to speed up your play:

  1. Play ready golf - if it is safe to do so, play your shot even if you’re nearer the hole than your playing partners.
  2. Pay attention - watch your playing partners’ tee shots as well as your own.
  3. Play the right tees - playing a longer course will mean a longer round, so try to avoid this when its busy.
  4. Let faster players through - if you can't stay ahead.
  5. Play a provisional - it's much easier & quicker than trudging back to the tee or divot in the fairway having not found your tee or approach shot.
  6. Don't mark your card on the green - do it on the next tee.
  7. Pick up - if there’s no need to putt out, then don’t.
  8. Walk quicker - it gets your heart rate up and home earlier!

Course Marshaling

With immediate effect we will start marshaling the course, targeting afternoon play. The purpose is to 1) stop freeloaders playing our course without paying green fees; and 2) monitor course condition. Please do not be offended if you are approached and asked for your membership number. Please also book a tee-time before commencing play. Marshals will have a mobile EFTPOS machine and online access to the tee booking sheet.

Our staff work hard to keep the course in great condition, and this comes with a cost. Anyone who uses the course must pay their share and we intend to help them do so. We look forward to seeing some of you on your late afternoon rounds. Good golfing!

Annual General Meeting

The 2024 AGM (the 56th for lovers of history) will be held at the Clubrooms, 9.30am on Sat 07 Dec 24. This will be followed by a disc draw for 18- or 9-Holes of golf. We are still seeking members to join the committee. Nomination forms are available on the Clubhouse noticeboard and must be received by 30 Nov 24.
