The start of this week was all about the weather! 130mm of rain between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening was the most we've had in such a short period all year. Streams seemed to appear everywhere - and for a while the course was unrecognisable. Thankfully, the course has dried out remarkably quickly, largely due to the drainage work carried out at the end of last summer. We've also had a number of volunteers helping get the course back in shape - thanks to everyone who have generously given their time.

We've had five new members join this week. A big welcome (and in one case welcome back) to:

  • Anaru Cassidy (Junior U18)
  • Tom Harrison  (Junior 26-31)
  • Tobias La Riviere (Junior 19-25)
  • Isaac Milley (Junior 19-25)
  • David Martin (Summer)

All our regular competitions (Ladies Day, Wednesday Club & Wednesday Twilight) were cancelled this week due to the course being closed - so there's no results to share.

  • Women's Strokeplay Champs - THIS SUNDAY - 20 Oct: All 18 Hole women members are strongly encouraged to participate. It will be one gross round with winners eligible to compete in the Champion of Champions organised by Wellington Golf. Register your interest by emailing denise@karorigolf.co.nz.

  • She Loves Golf Event - Tue 29 Oct 5pm: We've now had 16 budding female golfers sign up for this - please keep spreading the word. You might have seen signs around the city promoting it. It's an introductory session for women interested in learning to play golf. Cost is $5, all equipment is provided as well as a free drink and nibbles afterwards. Register interest by emailing denise@karorigolf.co.nz

  • Wednesday Twilight - Come and get your midweek golfing fix on a Wednesday evening. It's fun & friendly with a few 'kooky' rules:
    • You can start off Holes 1, 5, or 8 – you choose!

    • You are gifted one ‘Mulligan’ (i.e. you get to have your shot again, any shot except a putt)

    • Placing is always ‘Through the Green’

    • You can choose the alternate hole on one green

    • Nearest-the-Pin is Hole 4 (any shot off the green is your NTP attempt i.e. could be your 2nd or 3rd shot)

    • All this and there’s a Prizegiving & BBQ afterwards!!!

  • Friday 9H All-comers: For those wanting to get a sneaky 9H in on a Friday morning, three tee times have been booked from 9am. The emphasis is on ‘social’ golf. So, if you’re keen to play 9H before the weekend with other members, please come along. Thanks to Peter Howman who has kindly offered to co-ordinate this group.

  • Gaskies All Comers: Perfect for new members and those who need to make up a four. Be at the Picnic Table every Sunday morning before 9am for the card draw. Tee off from 9am. Everyone welcome!
  • Junior Golf Coaching Programme: The programme is now fully subscribed with 45 young golfers signing up. For the next eight Sundays, Holes 1 - 9 will be for the exclusive use of programme participants between 1:30/2:00 - 4:30/5:00pm. Timings vary depending on which groups are playing the course each week. The practice facilities (fairway and putting green) will also be closed for programme use from 3:00 - 4:30pm. Please consider this when planning your weekend golf.

IMPORTANT: For the latest course status visit - www.karorigolf.co.nz

Greenskeepers update this whenever there is a status change. When the course is closed, this means the practice facilities are closed too!

Thank You!

A huge thanks to the volunteers that turned up on Wednesday to help repair the flood damage. With all the extra hands, we were able to get the course back up and running and on track for the City of Wellington Classic. Also, thank you to all you golfers who showed patience to give us space to clean up the course. (Cheers TK)

Call for Help - 'Adopt-a-Hole' Initiative

I'd like to thank the following members for volunteering their time to help get our course in tip top shape for the City of Wellington Classic on 02 Nov 24.

There are still holes available! It involves:

  • Organising a small group (2 - 4 members)
  • Adopting a Hole (1 - 18)
  • Repairing divots/pitch marks from tee block to green (this could be done each time your group play your adopted hole)
  • Collecting sticks under trees & placing in a pile
  • Other hole specific tasks as required

If you're willing and able please email me: TK@karorigolf.co.nz.

Cart Use

Carts should be OK to use this weekend, but please stick to the fairways. If your ball is in the rough, please park on the fairway and walk to it. This will not only protect the wetter areas from being damaged, but also make it less likely we'll need to prevent cart use in the future.

Further Improvements

You might see a couple of nice upgrades to our course when you arrive this weekend. The tee markers have been kiwi-ised on Hole 11 and the front fence & sign have been painted. Thanks to Tony Hewitt & Ange Ross for their help with these.
