Captain's Comments

It was good to get the Gaskie's going again this Sunday past.

Gaskies is a "all comers" group of members who meet on Sunday morning to play golf and enjoy each other's company.

It is particularly good for new members who are looking for people to pair up with to enjoy their golf.

We all have different golfing needs and desires but golf always goes better with others.

We meet at the picnic table downstairs before 9am to do a card draw before we tee off.  You never know who you will be playing with so your chance of meeting more golfers at the club is pretty good.

One thing that will happen from now on is that a new organisor will be starting the group each Sunday so, that whenever there is an event on at the club, the Gaskie's group can continue no matter who may be absent as happened with the club champs.

Sunday this week, Fiona Kearns (life member) will be organising the start at 9.00am. As it happens this coincides with the women's club championships (one round strokeplay event) taking place on the same day.  So to all our new women members a special invitation to get along this Sunday for this event too.  If numbers warrant it there will be two divisions, Silver and Bronze (depending on handicap - handicap ranges will be advertised by Denise in Friday Flash).  The winner of the Silver Gross event will be entitiled to play in the WGI Champion of Champions later on in November.

I will be writing to all our recent new members to invite them to come along to Gaskie's too.

And, for all you regulars, we are open for business again.  Come along and make up the fours.

Water, water everywhere...

Today's weather can only be described as terrible.

At the time I talked with TK this morning 98mm of rain had already inundated the course and it was still falling.

Obviously the course is closed and is likely to remain closed until at least Thursday to allow time for water to recede, the course to recover to a playable state and the staff able to start mowing the fairways and rough.

There will be no carts until further notice.

As you can see from these images the course has taken a real hammering.  TK is not only checking the course for flood damage but also making sure none of our bridges have had their banks undermined by the raging torrents.

TK will keep us informed.

As for the volunteers, I will be in touch during the week.  we may need to put in some hours to assist in the cleanup.  TK will advise me what might need doing when we can get back on the course.  Keep an eye out for an update.

City of Wellington Classic - Call for Entries

The City of Wellington Classic is only two weeks away, 2 November 2024, and entries are open. There are two men's divisions; players with handicaps up to 12 Division 1, and players with handicaps over 12. There is also a women's division.

Prizes are awarded for Best Gross scores(s), Nett score(s); and Stableford in all divisions.  This means that everyone is "in the game".  While the gross prizes will go to the top golfers handicaps mean we all compete as equals.

A special shout out to our "futures" members too.  A bunch of you guys entered the Karori Junior Open and four of you won prizes.  This tournament golf is fun and younger people entering is as good for you as it is for the club.  Get mum and dad to shout you the entry and come along.

The are also incentive prizes for longest drive and twos and who knows what else. And for those of us who just make up the numbers on the day, a good raffle will be held with a bunch of different prizes.  $5 for three tickets or $2 each.

This is our pre-eminent tournament of the year and we would encourage all members to enter.  Members who are part of, and those who aspire to, our inter club setup should prioritise this event.

Entries close Wednesday 30 October at 5pm. Note, this is different to what is on the poster.  We are closing entries at this time to allow us to complete and advise the draw.

And a shout out to our women members.  Your prize table is very good so come and get your names in.  Everyone is good enough as the handicap system means we all play as equals. Enter online or contact the club to be entered.

The entry fee is $40 for Karori members and $50 for affiliated visitors. You may pay your event entry on the day.

Adopt A Hole - Thank you for your Service!

Thank you to all those who have signed on as volunteers.  The quality of the course where we have teams looking after the playing surface on these holes is really pleasing.

We still have holes available for volunteers and I would encourage anyone to join the team.

All that is required is to fix divots, repair any plug marks and move any debris into the tree line for the staff to pick up. It only takes a moment of your time and makes a huge difference to the staff as they work to maintain and improve our course.

So I'm putting a challenge out to all our various groups; Gaskie's, Matts Mobb (they already service three holes), Shirties (they do one hole), Twilight, Tuesday Women, Wednesday Club, Friday Nine Holers and everyone else who uses the course consistently, adopt a hole and "show it some love".
