Good morning golfers
Short and sweet today.
Not much golf at the club during the week as the course was closed because of course renovations and bad weather.
Lots of golf at the weekend largely because of round 2 of the Club Championships Stroke Play Championships.
Lots of "Futures" playing in the champs and great to see two women playing and qualifying for the match play championships.
And, there was a special happening on Sunday for one golfer. At the 6th hole, Alex Lim holed in one! AWESOME Alex.
He did however get it wrong about what happens after a hole in one. He suggested to the bartender that I owed him a drink; it's the other way round Alex. Who scores a hole in one shouts the clubhouse! Not to worry Alex, your drink was paid for.
1. Course renovations
A big thank you to the green staff and volunteers (heaps of these - really great turnout every day). Late on Friday afternoon all greens were cored, sanded and seeded ready for the weekend.
As well as all that, the fairways were mowed and the rough cut on all the par fours and par fives. The grass is growing really quickly now that it is spring.
On Sunday the greens were rolled for the Club Champs and putted remarkably well for recently renovated surfaces.
As always, not everything went smoothly.
The sanding hopper broke down so all sand had to be distributed by hand; then the irrigation system went down so thank goodness for Saturday night rain.
The irrigation system is "out of the ark" and it appears one or more sensors has malfunctioned. One out, all out, so the course has no irrigation until the fault can be found. Just another thing that needs replacing on the course. It's important to get the irrigation working again as quickly as possible or else we are in danger of losing all the good work that has been done on the greens, and until we get water back we are unable to renovate the tee boxes and surrounds. More on this at another time.
2. Coaching
Spring time is a great time to "renovate" your game.
Stephen offers great rates to club members, so why not take your game to another level. Give Stephen a call and book a time. You won't regret it!
3. Club Championships
Senior Stroke Play Champion: David Farmer (158) after a playoff with Scott McHardy and Grant Pollard also on (158).
Good effort David on a double winning this trophy last year too.
Intermediate Stroke Play Champion: Neil Hoskin (173) from Graham Black, Keith Atkinson and Steve Witkowski (174)
Junior A Stroke Play Champion: Stuart Preston (169) from Tony Synge (173) and Horn Dim (180).
Junior B Stroke Play Champion: Silas Campbell (180) from Michael Pike (187) and Kevin Kane (201).
The Match Play Championships commence this week and the draws are posted in the clubhouse. Default Tee Times are on the tee booking sheet although players are encouraged to play on or before the day if they can.
4. Golf this week
The weather is looking better for the week so all our normal golfing activity can go ahead. TK will assess when it is ok for carts to be on the course and hopefully if the weather remains fine with a bit of wind this will be sooner than later.
We are rapidly approaching daylight savings and the Thursday Twilight will be underway really soon.
It's great to see a new group of women who are keen to play twilight on a Tuesday. I'm sure the club will be delighted to accommodate this group. As the weather gets better we will need to be very flexible in supporting the needs of our members, particularly as we are looking to encourage more women to join and get involved in the golf club. I'm sure Denise will have more to say about this when she returns from her well earned break.
5. Governance
We need new faces on the committee. A number of the current committee are retiring.
The tasks are not onerous and there is a committee meeting once a month.
Jobs that need doing are: Treasury, Match, Course, House, Regulatory (rules, safety and the like), Volunteers, Fund Raising, and Increasing Membership. (I'm sure I've missed something).
Committee Members will be shoulder tapping people. Don't be shy, the only question should be, "why not".
As a small(er) club we rely on good volunteer help and only our members can step in to help in these roles.
Nomination forms will be posted on the noticeboard soon some come on and get on board. The Annual Meeting will be on the first Saturday in December (01 December).
