Kia ora koutou,
What a fantastic result with 80(ish) members having signed up for the Club Champs! It’s fantastic to see all divisions well subscribed and many of our Women & Juniors/Futures members entered. The next few Sundays are going to be a lot of fun!
Club Competitions
Club Champ Qualifiers - 01 Sep: The Club Champs is all about having fun. It is true there is always an 'edge' as players compete for position, but we are all amateur golfers, and we play this game for fun. Please help nurture our newer and Futures members around the course. Those of us who have been around for a while know the 'rules’, but it is likely that there will be some glitches along the way. An example is taking a placing in a penalty area, or dropping incorrectly after a ball has crossed a boundary. Gentle correction will sort the matter out and help make it a positive experience for all.
There have been a few changes since the draw was emailed yesterday, so here’s the amended draw for this Sunday:
Any further changes will be advised on check-in. Here are some other key points:
-
Report to the shop at least 15 mins before your tee time to collect your card.
-
Please take a sand bucket and repair all divots/plug marks.
-
No gimmes - all putts must be holed.
-
Placing will remain at a club length, no closer to the hole, and in the same class of ground.
-
All cards must be signed by a player and a marker, then entered into the computer.
-
Please bring cash to support the Club Raffle.
Sheena Allen Grandmothers Trophy: A tee time for 9.35am this Sunday has been booked for those playing. This slot runs just after the Club Champs have teed off. Good luck to those entering.
Women’s Competitions: The Women’s Club Captain, Denise Marten, is keen too to get an event for the women going in October and details will be announced in the coming weeks. Also, we are considering starting up a Twilight Midweek Women’s Competition. Please email clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz if this is something you are interested in.
Wednesday Club: A field of 13 golfers played a Stableford competition in wonderful weather. Unfortunately, and understandably, carts were not allowed as the course was still wet from the huge amount of rain over the previous two days. Martin Leung was the winner on 39 points with Marcus Henry second on countback from Terry McAlister both with 37 points. Terry was nearest the pin and paid the pig for missing his two. There were no twos on the day. Mike Cox won the cash raffle with Luke Underwood second. Jim Waters won the red and white wine raffle with Victor Diem taking second prize.
There is a new incentive for playing in the Wednesday competition with the addition of more chocolates! The “bunny” (the player who has the worst score on the day) receives a golf ball and a chocolate. Anyone who wins a golf ball has the option of trading it in for a chocolate. Also, anyone who doesn’t win a prize and stays for the prize giving, is able to help themselves to a chocolate before they leave. Therefore, the Wednesday competition has an alternative name as the Wine and chocolate competition! Remember, no competition next Wednesday as the greens are being cored.
**NEW** Friday 9H All-comers: For those wanting to get a sneaky 9H in on a Friday morning, 3 x tee times have been booked from 9am. The emphasis is on ‘social’ golf. So, if you’re keen to play 9H before the weekend with other members, please come along. Thanks to Peter Howman who has kindly offered to facilitate this group.
Futures/Juniors: It’s fantastic see so many have signed up to play in the Club Champs! This will likely be your first competitive golfing experience. Be sure to ask lots of questions and check your understanding of the rules with experienced golfers in your group – it’s the best way to learn!
Due to the Club Champs Qualifiers and Match Play over the next month, there will be no organised tee-off times/coaching on Sundays. You are all welcome to book tee-times on a Saturday or after the competition ends around 2pm on Sunday. Watch this space for our next Futures/Junior Tournament scheduled for Sunday 22 Sep 24. Good luck and well done to those who have entered the Club Champs!
From the Superintendent
Rough Mowing Between Holes 16 & 17: Due to the wet weather lately, greens staff have been unable to mow the rough between and around Holes 16 & 17. Some areas have become quite muddy, so please avoid if possible. Any inconvenience is regretted.
Greens Coring: 03 - 04 Sep: The course will be closed for coring on Wed 03 & Thu 04 Sep. This is essential work to help combat common challenges such as soil compaction, thatch accumulation, waterlogging, and nutrient deficiencies. Weather permitting, we hope to have the front 9 open by Thu 05 Sep. There's something for everyone to do and it's OK to roll up to the Clubhouse on either day at around 10.30am. All you need to bring is:
If weather necessitates a change of plan, this will be communicated to registered volunteers via email on either Mon afternoon or by 6am Tue morning.
