Club Report

Good morning golfers

I've been away for a while and I'm going to be away for a bit longer.  All sorts of reasons but suffice to say that I am required in the South Island just now.

In the meantime the club has been running well and I really want to thank Adrian Porter, Denise Marten, Clayton Willocks and all the staff for keeping the club house going.

I also want to acknowledge and thank our course supervisor TK and his team.  I played the course for the first time is about three weeks on Saturday and I am hugely impresssed at what has been achieved through the winter with the very limited resources which have been available to him.

Please note, and I cannot stress this enough, there is a bunch of work coming up which is going to require volunteers.  TK will put out a call and when he does we need an army of helpers to answer the call.  This will particularly be the case when we get on to course renovations in September.  The more hands available to sand and smooth the greens the better as we will be in the middle of the club championships qualifying rounds.  Obviously the sooner we get this work done the better the playing surface will be so we all have a big stake in this.

I do hope to be back in time for Club Champs but at anyrate I will be keeping an eye on what is going on through the website.

So, to the report.

1. Ken and Rose Rigarlsford Trophy Event

Rose Rigarlsford playing the "Ceremonial First Shot"

Sixty one golfers competed in the Ken and Rose Rigarlsford Trophy event on Saturday 27 July.

Thank you to Rose for her donation to the club to cover the golf prizes.  This made for a generous prize table to celebrate those who played well.  It was lovely to see Rose supported by her family, Grandaughter Jessica Townley, her partner Tristan Joe, and Richard Townley.

The golf really was incidental to the day but congratulations go to Julie Watson who won the Rose Rigarlsford Trophy with 38 points and Gary Clarke who won the Ken Rigarlsford Trophy with 40 points.

Thank you to the Golf Warehouse who donated towards augmenting the prize pool and raffle prizes, Stephen Wood golf professional for a donation of a golf lesson, Gipps Strret Butchery for their donation of a meat voucher, Penny's Cafe and Terry Bastion for their donation to the raffles.

The happy club house gave a huge vote of thanks to TK and the team and the staff for their efforts in keeping everyone fed and watered.

Thanks again to Denise and Adrian for their extra efforts in organising the event in my absence.

2. Club Championships

The Club Championships are rapidly approaching.

As usual we will have four divisions, Senior (open), Intermediate (Handicap Restricted), Junior A (Handicap Restricted), and Junior B (Handicap Restricted).

Anyone may enter the Senior Club Championships.

The qualifying rounds constitute the Karori Golf Club Stroke Play Championships and serve as the seeding rounds for the Match Play Karori Golf Club Championship.  The top sixteen qualifiers in each division will contest the match play rounds.  All matches are "off the stick" - no shots are given.

There is no entry fee.  Entry is limited to Karori Golf Club members only.

Don't delay in getting your entry in.  The sooner we have some idea the size of the field the sooner we will be able to organise tee priorities.

The dates are as follows:

Qualifying Rounds: Sundays 01 September and 08 September
(Please note - even if you are only available for one of the qualifying rounds you may still qualify for the match play Championship).

Matchplay rounds: Consecutively every Sunday from 15 September with the final played on 6 October.

All matches (except the final) may be played on or before the date.  The final must be played on the day.

There will be a Championship Stableford played in conjunction with the final on 6 October for all club members.

Enter online (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/event-calendar), or enail the club (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) and there will be a sign on sheet in the foyer.  You may also call the club on (04) 476 7337.

3. Monthly Medal - 18 August

This monthly medal will be a disc draw at 8.30am.

Shirties and Matts Mob are looking to have a "sort out" at the end of November and in consideration of the time concession for tee times then, there is agreement that as a "quid pro quo" we will look to holding one disc draw a month as a way to play together as a club more regularly.

The tee booking sheet will be altered to reflect this (there will be some limited early tee times available).

This will suit most of the three groups who have tee slots on the Sunday.  Everyone will be welcome.  The disc draw will mean that the field will be mixed so who you play with will be in the luck of the draw.  A great way to meet other members, enjoy their company and socialise afterwards.

Prizes and raffles after the golf.  Could be a lot of fun and a helpful addition to boosting the club coffers a bit.

No need for early entry.  Enter on the day.

4. Care of the Course.

This.....

I think we need to get some of these produced and erected at the first and tenth tees, and also in a sign board on the bar in the shop.

It's not only green fee players who don't fix the damage that is done to the course.

Take a sand bucket and a pitch repairer every time you play golf.

I now take two buckets with me every time I play and on Saturday I emptied twelve buckets in divots on the course.  Divots in the rough need to be repaired too.

If we all did our bit, the course would improve to another level.  C'mon everyone - lets help out our greens team.

Also, please remember, the course is not a place to practise.

We have good practice facilities for those who need to work on thir game, and, we also have a club professional who can help you sort out your glitches.

Far too aften I notice three or four "craters" right next to each other.  This is a huge annoyance, particularly when the dislodged turf is just a few feet away from where the damage occured.

We do acknowledge that when playing on your own (working on your game) it is not unusual to play a couple of balls.  This is fine, but, please care for the course.

5. Results

Note, all results are on the website.

I am starting to notice that some players are not entering their cards post round.

I have the ability to enter a penalty score if cards are not being entered.  In the first instance I will contact the player concerned to let them know that I have concerns before doing so.

Anytime you play a game of golf you must enter your score.

6. Coaching.

This guy is good.

Book a time with him and get your game sorted before the club champs.

ENDS

That's it for this week.
I'll be back as soon as I can but as the saying goes - "it's complicated".

Hopefully the weather will sort itself out this week and you will be able to enjoy your golfing week.
