News

Congratulations to Sarah McNaughtan and Luanne Cockburn who took out the Bertram Cup on Sunday. It was an epic match. The ladies came from behind to level the match and then won it on the 20th hole!

Subscriptions

Thank you to all who have paid their subs in the last week. There are still quite a few overdue and the club would be very grateful if these could be settled in the near future.

Course Update

We've had a couple of unfortunate injuries suffered on the course lately due to the slippery ground. You'll notice there's new anti slip 'SmartGrid' added to the bridge leading to the 6th tee box. TK and his team are doing their best to keep the course safe. Please don't hesitate to let the clubhouse know if you see any maintenance issues or hazards that need attention.

Futures/Juniors

Last Sunday was another great turnout from the Juniors with a wide range of ages & abilities. We had at least one of our members make the most of the school holidays and play over 100 holes during the week!!!  Our teaching pro, Stephen Wood, will be there this Sunday sharing his golfing expertise. The format is:

·        10.30am – Junior Members: Invited to attend Stephen's fortnightly coaching session.

·        11.30am - Open invite to all juniors to play the course. They choose their tees & to play either 9 or 18 holes. This is followed with complimentary fries & drink in the Clubhouse ??

Please remember that sessions for learner golfers can be arranged with Maurice Munro through the Clubhouse (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz). Ideally, these would align with Stephen’s fortnightly sessions.

Wednesday Club

Yesterday, a small field of only 10 golfers played a Stableford competition in pleasant conditions, until the heavy drizzle arrived late in the round. Terry Mcalister was the winner on 34 points with Patrick Cordue  second on 32 points. Graham Black was nearest the pin and paid the pig. Mike Cox won the raffle.

Ladies

Terrible weather again on Tuesday meant no women competing. However on Monday a rep from brandex who import and sell Cross golf wear ( a reputable Swedish brand ) came out to the course to have a look. I explained we don’t sell clothing but arranged with her to bring her suitcase of samples to show the women on Tuesday. Sadly, that didn’t happen due to the aforementioned weather. However, if you go to their website www.brandex.co.nz and see something you like; they sell both for men and women , use this code KARORI15 and you will get 15% off your purchase. Offer valid until August 31.

Update from the President

I am aware that some recent actions by the committee may not have been sufficiently explained, so here is an update, on this and where we are.

Finances. The restructure which we announced in June, and which resulted in the disestablishment of the position of club manager, has had the required effect on Club finances though the full benefit will only be seen from August onwards. Ongoing costs now materially reduced by the saving in the manager’s salary, a new regime of lower manning levels in the clubrooms and a general cracking down on expenditure in all possible areas. This has been assisted by really good greenfee income, and this seems to be continuing through the winter whenever we have fine weather. We will run at a loss this year, certainly after depreciation and perhaps before this figure, and cash is very tight but we have a small overdraft provision which we are seeking to increase – just in case.

We are just starting the process of budgeting for next year with treasurer Terry McAllister leading this. You should expect a modest subs increase (annual increases are now policy) and we are confident that we will be able to craft a budget that improves on this year’s financial performance, with the benefit of the newly implemented lower cost structures.

Course. All members will be well aware that the course is in great shape, thanks to the efforts of TK and William. We have not replaced the third greenkeeper over winter but we will require a third member of the team when spring growth arrives and may need some further resources before then to keep the course up to the newly established standard, and to carry out the course renovations that TK has planned.

Club administration. The clubrooms are running very well under the excellent supervision of Denise Marten ably assisted by Clayton, Debbie, Isaak and Lina. Staffing levels, and costs, are significantly lower under the new structure which again helps with our cash position. The club’s administration is also in good hands, with Adrian Porter carrying out the bulk of the work while training Clayton in the myriad of tasks required: with the intention that Clayton picks up this work alongside his work in the clubrooms. Adrian was to have stepped down from the committee at the end of the year, but will now do so at the end of the month, after many years of service to the club in a variety of roles. He has kindly agreed to continue his support in the admin area but I’m keen that we train a further person in the club processes to give us the security of a backup to Clayton longer-term.

Committee. With Adrian stepping down from the committee numbers are down to six. This meets quorum requirements and we will manage for the rest of the year, but will need significant strengthening for next year. I will be stepping down also. So, we have for next year a solid core of committee members, but we need a new president, vice president and several more committee members for what will be a busy period looking forward. Work on the committee is important and interesting – please give serving on it serious thought.

And please note that all committee members and others who contribute so much to the club are volunteers, doing their best for the club without material recompense. We are happy to hear about issues, receive helpful suggestions and to be thanked for our work but please make sure that such feedback is moderate and positive.
