Good morning golfers

 

I always enjoy seeing new names atop the results on the occasions that it happens, and this weekend did not let me down at all.

 

Congratulations to Gary Wellbelove, Jack Douglas for topping the Holland Cup Qualifier and Gail Kirkland who qualified third.  Then on to Sunday Club Day and Kevin Kane, Ciaran O'Kelly had outstanding rounds.  For Ciaran it was his second sub 80 round of the weekend (79 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday) all the more remarkable as his 79 on Saturday was the first time that he had broken 80.

 

Further down the list was Jack Douglas, Marin Bigwood, Gus Tulloch interspersed with the results from many of our stalwarts.

 

Golf clubs regularly need to refresh and seeing new names is a good indication of the health of the club.  Let's have more of this.

 

I won't be doing a Sunday Reults section this week - this pretty much give you a sense of who achieved what Sunday past.

 

On Tuesday a group of us are having a chat about the Youth/Junior development program.  This comes from the first of the coaching clinics.  We will debrief, go through the  membership list and look at how we can engage better with this group of young people. 

 

I know we have had this on our agenda for some time but there is now some momentum.  as a starter we are looking to book out regular tee times on a Sunday for Youth/Junior involvement and the extent to which we can build this is going to be on our minds.  Keep watching.

 

Once again a reminder about two events coming up soon.

 

Easter Monday we are having an Ambrose event sponsored by Crofton Downs Mitre 10, the proceeds of which will go to defray the cost of the recent drainage work.  At the moment we have 14 teams entered and there is room for more.  It certainly looks to be a very busy event and should be a lot of fun.

 

There is still time to get a team in, or, if you are on your own and would like to play you may register and we will find you a team.  Also, feel free to invite players you may know from other clubs to join you.  It's a gentle way for them to get to know Karori.

 

The beauty about Ambrose events is that you almost feel like a professional with the scores that teams manage.  It is the classic reminder that a team is always stronger than the individual.

Then there is the ANZAC Day Commemoration and golf tournament. 

 

The course will be closed until mid afternoon to allow for the tournament on Thursday 25 April.

 

A hot breakfast will be available and there will be "fortification" available at some of the tees on the way around. 

 

Karori Golf Club Members will be playing for the Fraser Smith trophy and all players will be looking at a generous prize table.

 

Entry fee is $20 which includes the breakfast.  Raffle tickets will be additional.

Both our 9 Hole and 18 Hole women golfers will be contesting their Medley events.  All women members are invited to play and enjoy the conviviality afterwards with a sandwich and a beverage of your choice. 

 

 

This tees off at 10.30am on the Wednesday Morning, so be at the club house in plenty of time for the disc draw.  The fields have been encouraging and everyone is welcome to get along for a great day.  The disc draw ensures that you are likely to play with someone new virtually every Wednesday you participate.

 

$5 covers your entry and buys you a raffle ticket.

 

 

 

We are getting close to the end of Daylight Savings and therefore the end of Thursday Twilight.

 

It's been a great season well enjoyed by many who look to get a gentle head start on the weekend.  If you have never played the twilight, it's never too late to start and who knows, you may become a regular at the start of the new season later in the year.

 

Everyone is welcome.

 

 

This will be round 6 of the Autumn Cup which is an event for our non interclub golfers.  The leaderboard is quite congested with Cathal Curtain, Nelson Laureles, Terry McAlister and Chris Pearce all on 10 points,  followed by James Philpot and Jonty Du Toit both on 9.

 

With four rounds to go, there's nothing in it.

 

 

The Shirties, Matts Mob and Gaskies all support and promote Sunday Club Day.  It's a great way to enjoy a little competition in your Sunday round with a trophy at the end of the season for most accumulated stableford points over your best ten rounds.

 

The Gaskies is designed as an all comers group, particularly welcoming to those who may be new to the club or new to organised weekend gold.  Everyone is good enough to play golf as the handicapping system ensures that we all compete as equals. 

 

I will be writing to a number of you personally inviting you to join us on a Sunday as a way of breaking the ice.  Come along - it is a lot of fun.

 

Also, we are getting a good few who are playing a little later in the day which can often be useful for those who have other things on a Sunday morning.   A number of them have been featuring in the results recently too. 

 

Our Women golfers are playing round 1 of their Sullivan Cup competition, a strokeplay event. 

 

And for the sixteen players who qualified, the first round of the Holland Cup needs to be completed by the close of play this coming Sunday 24 March.  A draw for the quarter finals will be done following completion of this round.

 

 

Divisions 2, 5 and 12 are playing at home this weekend with Div 9 away to Boulcott Farm

 

All our teams are working hard to garner points as the competition in the divisions hots up.

 

Div 2 play Te Marua, Div 5 play Boulcott Farm, Div 12 play Titahi Bay.  By all accounts there are some scores to settle.  Watch as the results come in next Monday.

 

 

Please remember to take a sand bucket with you when you play, repair all divots (on the fairways) and plug marks (on the greens) which you may find.  Its a courtesy for the golfers following you and it protects our course.

 

Sadly there was evidence of a divot being taken out of one of our putting greens over the last few days.  There is absolutely no excuse for doing this.  If your ball has landed on another green when playing a different hole, drop off the green before playing your shot.  More than likely though the taking of a divot on a green happens in anger after a missed putt. 

 

Just don't do it.

 

It's not about you.  We are all entitled to enjoy the golf course.

 

 

In conjunction with TK, I will be calling a volunteer day for a general clean-up around the course (quite a lot of debris in trees and so on) prior to our Ambrose tournament.  Keep an eye out for the call.  The more the merrier as (excuse me) "many hands make light work"!
