Captain's Corner
Club Report
Good morning golfers

1. City of Wellington Classic

Just four days to go until the City of Wellington Classic and entries are still coming in.  There is still time to get your entry in but remember that there will be no post entries on the day.  So you will not be able to rock up and play.  For the record, entries close at 5pm this Friday 3 November.  A draw will be completed after that.  The draw will be done in handicap order (lowest to highest by division) as this is a Wellington Golf order of merit tournament.

You can enter online (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/event-calendar), by letting Keith know (cluhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) or calling the club and talking to a person (04) 476 7337.

There is also a sign on sheet in the downstairs foyer.  All names on it from yesterday afternoon have been entered.

The women's field has doubled and I'm delighted to advise that some of our Karori women have entered.  Again, there's still time for more to get in.

There will be a multi tee start at 9am.  Please register at the club house from 8am onwards.

Casual golf on Saturday will commence after 2.30pm.  All tees will be closed for the tournament until then.

Please check the booking sheet (online) for more details.

2. Volunteer Day - Thursday 2 November.

We can use an army of volunteers for final touches to the course before the City of Wellington Classic.

Please report to the club house by 9am to be allocated tasks.  There will be something for everyone to do.  Wear sturdy footwear and gloves and bring a rake/shovel or both with you.

Lunch will be provided (midday(ish)) and there will be nine holes of golf following, off the short tees.

3. We need Committee Members

Keep your eyes out for details of the Annual General Meeting to be held soon.

There are several vacancies on the committee and in light of the many challenges we could use some new people on the committee.  All positions are up for election and it would be good to see people volunteer to help.

More details soon.

2. Karori Eagles Halberg Foundation Tournament

Apologies to the organisers for the quality of the graphic.  Sadly this email system will not load a PDF document so I had to take a photo.

All the same the details are on the the flyer.

This is always a great day for a very worthy cause.  At $15 for Karori Members it is a "steal".

Enter online (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/event-calendar), or by emailing Keith (cluhouse@karorigolf.co.nz), or phone the club and talk to a person (04) 476 7337.

There is already a sign on sheet in the downstairs foyer.

You know the drill.  Enter and lets have a great day out.

4. The Longest Day Challenge - Sat 16 Dec 2023. 4 x 18 hole rounds for Men and Women

This event is a fund raiser for the Cancer Society.

Scott McHardy (Monty) is going to be taking the "challenge" to raise funds for the Cancer Society.  Last year a team of eight golfers  took on the challenge at the Karori course.

It's a great thing to do for this cause.

If you are keen the event is on the website for you to enter.  Enter online(https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/event-calendar), then let me know and we will give you a shoutout to our members too.

5. Wellington Vets

A field of 49 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day at the club.

The competition was in two divisions.

Division 1 results saw Eric Simpson (Wainuiomata) the winner on 41 points from Neville Carson (Miramar) on 38, Robert Spring (Boulcotts Farm) 37 and the best of the Karori players Tim Brosnahan on 36.

Division 2 results gave the win to Clive Ralph (Mornington) on 38 points (on count back) from Karori's Saint Kennach 38, Mark Casey (Wainuiomata) 36 and David Copeland (Miramar) 35.

Three players got two's; Robert Spring (Boulcotts Farm) on 4 & 6, Ian MacLean (Manor Park) on 4, and Eric Simpson (Wainuiomata) on 13.

Thank you to Ian Bates and his team for organising the event.

6. Sunday Golf

Following the "let's not blame the ref" game on Sunday there was some golf played.

Top of the pops in Sunday Club Day was James Philpot 43pts, from Jonty Du Toit 39 and Ian Dumbleton 36.

Sunday Club will be back to normal this week.

Remember Shirties, Matts Mob and Gaskies all support Sunday Club Day.  You may join up with any of these groups (you will be made most welcome), particularly the Gaskies where you arrive at the picnic table by 8.45am for the 9.06 tee time.  A card draw is done to sort out the "fours" before teeing off.  This is a great way to get involved in golf at Karori, particularly for new members and visitors.  The banter in the club house afterwards is infectous.

I try to be there most Sunday's but when I'm not there, there is always someone who will help organise the groups.

7. Golf this week

Our women are playing today.  Good luck to the finalist in the nine hole match play.

Wednesday Competition will be on tomorrow.

Be at the club house by 10.15am for the disc draw ahead of the 10.30am tee time. Everyone is welcome including affiliated visitors.
$5 pays your entry and buys a raffle.

Thursday Twilight

This is so much fun.  Get along and enjoy a relaxing Thursday evening.

Saturday is City of Wellington.

Sunday is Club Day.

8. Inter Club Organisation starts right now:

From tomorrow all golfers may select the Inter Club Challenge when they print their card.  Please note this is voluntary but it will be useful as we look to settle teams for this coming season.

There are two divisions and your handicap will determine which division you are in for trial purposes.  This of course may change as your handicap changes.  Please play with a "marker" to verify your score.

This season we have teams in Division (promoted on the basis of finishing second in div 3, 2023), Div 5, Div 9 and the "Hillbillies" Div 12.

Interclub players play a home and away match play series against five other teams so are able to play a number of courses throughout the Wellington and Wairarapa region.  Anyone keen to have a go, should. I would especially like to encourage our low handicapped Juniors to have a go too.

Details of the match play trials will be announced shortly.

That's all for this week
I'll report again on what is looking to be a busy week, next week.
Take advantage of the weather while it lasts and enjoy your golfing week.
