Captain's Corner
Club Report
Good afternoon golfers

I have held off putting out this report in order that the president could make the announcement concerning the resignation of our club manager Robyn.

As someone who has worked closely with her over the last eight months I am sad at this announcement but having had the chance to talk with Robyn today I entirely understand why she has decided that she needs to return to the UK.  I am going to miss her.  Whoever takes the job next will have big shoes to fill.

I am not going to rehearse all the challenges which Robyn has faced in her time with us but they have been many.  Through all of it she has kept a good sense of humour as she sorted out one problem to the next.

So from me personally Robyn, all the very best of British (pardon the pun) in your next moves.

Obviously this report is going to be quite brief as a consequence.

1. Westward Ho Final

Our club has embraced inclusiveness in our competitions and this Sunday the final of the Westward Ho will be between Grant Pollard and Gail Kirkland.

Gail had to go 19 holes to win her match.  Well done to her and I have no doubt that the final will be an absolute cracker.  Two very good golfers going toe to toe.  Good luck to you both.

2. Rigarlsford Trophy Event

This is being held this Saturday 19 August, with a 10am tee time.

Report to the clubhouse by 9.15am for registration and a pot luck morning tea.  Please bring a plate.

Rose Rigarlsford has made a generous donation to the prize pool and there will be prizes for our Men, Women and Visitors.  The match is a stableford, twos and closest to the pin on the 4th hole.

Gail Kirkland has organised the raffles and a goodly stash of prizes is already in the hamper.  If you have anything that you would donate to the raffle prizes you may bring it out on Saturday morning.  (I think I have a couple of boxes of chocolates for the table.)

This is likely to be Robyn's swansong in terms of club events so if you haven't entered and would like the chance to come along to sup with Robyn you may still enter up until 4pm on Thursday 17 August.  You can enter by going to our website (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/home) and adding your name, by contacting Robyn (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) or by calling the club (04)476 7337 and talking to a person.

To date fifty people have entered.  The course will be closed until about 2.30pm to facilitate the event.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.  The weather is looking entirely acceptable.

3. Club Championships Qualifying and Karori Gross Championship

Most of you will have received an email calling for entries for the Karori Golf Club Championships.

These commence with a two round qualifying event (Sunday 3 & 10 September) played in four divisions which doubles as outr stroke play championship.  Seniors and Intermediates will play off the Blue Tees and the Junior A & B players will play off the White Tees.

Please note, the email that you received indicates your possible division but this will not be known until the close of entries on Thursday the 31st of August (4pm).  There will be no post entries.  Enter by the closing date our you will miss out.

The Senior Division is an open division and anyone may elect to play in the senior grade by notifying the club at the time of entry.

Handicaps for the Club Championships will be frozen on Monday 28 August.

To date 21 people have entered the club champs and you may enter by going to the website (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/home) and adding your name, contacting Robyn (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) or by phoning the club (04) 476 7337 and speaking with a person.  There is also a sign on sheet in the downstairs foyer which you may fill out.

The timetable is: qualifying, Sunday 3 & 10 September, Matchplay Sunday 17 September continuously until the final on 8 October.  This of course is all weather dependant.

The Club Championships are the club's premier event.  First round losers will contest a plate competition to be run in tandem to the club champs.

Tee times by division have already been booked with Seniors first off and Junior B last off.  Women may play in the club champs under the same rules and conditions as for the men.

The winners, runners up and the winners of the plate will receive an attractive prize along with their trophy.  The trophy presentation will be held immediately following the finals at the club house.  More on this as we get closer to the day.

While the committee have underwritten the club champs prize pool we are seeking sponsors and to date we have had a generous gift to the prize pool from Gipps Street Deli in Karori.  We would encourage all our members to fraternise this fine establishment for delectable delights.

4. Sunday Golf

a) Sunday Club Day:  Best results were Philip Hartley 39 pts on count back from Stuart Preston 39 and Eric McAuley 38.  Well done to those who finished.  The weather conspired to send half the field back toto the club house without completing their round for sustenance.

b) Westward Ho:

Grant Pollard prevailed against Dick Borgdorff who defaulted because of unavailabiltiy for the final; Gail Kirkland defeated Matthew Roche at the 19th.

5. Golf this week

Our women members played today but due to power outages at the club no results are available at the moment.

Wednesday Competition tees off tomorrow at 10.30am.
Be at the clubhouse at 10.15 to be in the disc draw.
$5 covers the competition and buys a raffle ticket.

This competition is open to all members and affiliated visitors so come along and join the fun.  It was good to see the numbers improving last week with a couple of people who had not played in the past..I am hopeful that as the weather improves that the numbers will swell to the forty/fifty of the past. (I might even get a game this week.)

Sunday Club is supported by Shirties, Matts Mob and Gaskies.

It is always possible to get a game on Sunday in the Sunday Club Competition.  If you are at a loose end and need a group to go out with be at the picnic table by 8.45am for the 9.06am tee off.  We do a card draw so the fours are mixed up.  You never know whose company you will have the pleasure of enjoying.

And good luck to the finalists in the Westward Ho.

That's more than enough for this week.

Get your entries in to our coming events.  I'm looking forward to a packed clubhouse on Saturday and let's see a full field enter the club champs.  It is most gratifying to see the interest in the senior grade.  Still one or two to enter so get to it.

Enjoy your golfing week.
